Class of 2015
Brad Blasy - Class of '91
Brad Blasy attended Midland High School where he lettered 9 times in football, hockey, and baseball earning all-conference awards in all three sports. Blasy received all-state and dream team recognition in football. Brad holds the MHS field goal record at 52 yards and went on to play football at Central Michigan University where he earned All-MAC honors in 1995.
Wilson Gay - Class of '46
Wilson Gay lettered in football and track while at Midland High School. Gay set the Chemic record in the mile run in his first race of 1945 and did not lose a single race in that event for his final two years at MHS. In 1946, Wilson set the mile record in meets at Albion, Mt. Pleasant, and River Rouge. Gay capped his high school track career by winning the MHSAA state championship in the mile run in 1945 and 1946. Wilson Gay graduated with a degree in Economics from Michigan State University and served three years in the United States Navy.
Mary Byers-Becker - Class of '82
Mary Byers earned nine varsity letters at Midland High School: three each in basketball, volleyball and softball. She achieved All-Saginaw Valley first team honors five times and second team honors three times during her high school career.
Byers was voted the Saginaw Valley League’s Most Valuable Player in both volleyball and basketball during her senior year at MHS and earned all-state honors in three sports: first team in basketball, second team in volleyball and honorable mention in softball. Byers attended the University of Dayton and earned four letters in basketball and two letters in softball. She was recognized as the Flyers’ top scholar-athlete in 1986.
Oscar Hahn - Class of '57
Oscar Hahn competed in football and track at Midland High School. Oscar received all-conference recognition during his junior and senior seasons and was an all-state running back in 1956. Hahn was the shot put state champion in 1957 MHSAA state track and field meet. He went on to earn three varsity letters at Michigan State University as a linebacker. Oscar later returned to Midland where he taught building trades and coached football at MHS.
Gary Jozwiak - Coach
Gary Jozwiak participated in football and track as a student at Midland High School. Jozwiak went on to play football at the University of Wyoming from 1957-1961 and returned to Midland to coach and teach mathematics in 1964.
Jozwiak was the varsity boys track coach at MHS from 1966-1996 winning eight SVL championships and two regional titles.
Jozwiak became the varsity football coach in 1975. When he retired with a career record of 178-59 following the 1997 season, no other coach in Saginaw Valley League history had won more games. Under Coach Jozwiak, the Chemics won ten
SVL championships, compiled seven undefeated seasons, and finished as the MHSAA runner-up in 1990 and 1993.
Harold Leigeb - Class of '56
Harold Leigeb attended Midland High School where he participated in football and track. Leigeb was selected as All Arrowhead Conference in 1953, 1954, and 1955. He was selected to the all-state football team during his junior and senior seasons. In 1955, Harold was the first Chemic ever voted to the National High School All-American Football Team and was invited to play in the East-West All- American Bowl. Harold Leigeb played football at Michigan State University from 1956-1959 and was a member of the 1957 National Championship football team.
Steve Money - Class of '90
Steve Money earned nine varsity letters at Midland High School in football, basketball, and baseball. Money received all-state football honors in 1988 and 1989 and was named to the Michigan Dream team in 1989. Steve was all-state baseball in 1989 and 1990. Money’s 64 hits in 1990 and his145 career hits remain Chemic records. Steve played baseball at Michigan State University from 1991-1994 earning All-Big Ten, Academic All-Big Ten, and Academic All-American honors in 1994.
Michaela Skelly-Lankford - Class of '82
Kayla Skelly participated in cross country and track at Midland High School. She was the MHSAA Class A individual cross country state champion in 1979, 1980, and 1981.
Kayla was also the state champion in the mile and two mile in 1982 setting the MHSAA two mile state record. She continued to run at Western Michigan University and was Mid American Conference champion in Cross Country twice and runner up twice. On the track, Skelly won the MAC championship in the 3000 meter run three times, the 5000 meter twice, and 10k twice. She was NCAA I All American in Cross
Country 1985. Kayla qualified in 1986 to compete in Marathon Olympic trials. Skelly graduated from Wayne State School of Medicine in 1990.
Thad Stanford - Class of '50
Thad Stanford earned ten varsity letters at Midland High School in golf, football, and basketball. The Chemic golf team won three consecutive state championships during his career. Stanford earned three letters in football and two letters in golf at the University of Michigan. Stanford had a distinguished career as an orthopedic surgeon and earned a law degree in 1977. Stanford is a member of the National High School Hall of Fame because of his contributions to the field of sports medicine.
Cletus (Charlie) & Marybeth Supinger - Community Members
Cletus and Marybeth Supinger were among many individuals who gave of their time and support to Midland High School. They were instrumental in supporting the original and subsequent phases of stadium construction on the MHS campus. Over the course of 50+ years, until their deaths in 1992, Cletus and Maribeth attended home and away football, basketball, and baseball contests. They always felt that every member of Midland High School were their adopted sons and daughters. In 1993, the Supingers were selected as members of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hall of Honor.
Richie Waite - Class of '60
Richie Waite earned nine varsity letters at Midland High School in football, basketball and baseball. Waite was the 1959 team MVP, earned all-conference, all-state, and the State of Michigan Dream Team status in football. Additionally, he was all-conference in basketball and baseball. Richie played professional baseball for over three years in the Boston Red Sox organization.
Michael Westley - Class of '58
Michael Westley attended Midland High School where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball earning all-state honors in football and lettered 9 times. As a senior, he was the starting QB and co-captain of the 1957 State Championship football team. Additionally, Michael was all-conference in both basketball and baseball in 1957 & 1958. Westley attended the University of Michigan where he played football for the Wolverines in 1959 and 1960.
