Class of 2016
Howard Mudd - Class of '59
Howard Mudd participated in track and was a standout football player at Midland High School earning three varsity letters, a 2nd Team All-State selection in 1957 and 1st Team All-State in 1958. He continued to play football first at Michigan State University (1959-1960) and then Hillsdale College (1960-1963.) Mudd played seven NFL seasons for the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears earning All-Pro designations in 1966, 1967, & 1968. At the conclusion of his playing career, Mudd became a well-respected offensive line coach for eight different NFL teams including the 2007 Super Bowl Champion, Indianapolis Colts.
Larry Jaster - Class of '62
Larry Jaster earned seven letters while participating in football, basketball, and baseball at Midland High School. Jaster played quarterback for the Chemic football team earning Detroit Free Press 1st Team All-State honors in 1961. Jaster holds the record for most career strike outs (305) and single season (130) by a Chemic pitcher. Larry signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1962 and played seven Major League seasons compiling a 35-33 overall record. He pitched five consecutive shutouts over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1966 and was a member of the 1967 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. After his career on the field finished, Jaster entered the coaching rank in high school, college, and most notably as a minor league pitching coach for two organizations.
Jeff Randolph - Class of '75
Jeff Randolph earned nine varsity letters while participating in Cross Country, Swim, and Track during his three years at Midland High School. Randolph finished in 3rd place in the 2-mile run during both his sophomore and junior track seasons and finished 2nd in the mile during his senior year. After finishing 3rd in his junior year of Cross Country, he capped his career by winning the MHSAA state championship his senior season. Jeff continued to run collegiately at the University of Wisconsin- Madison where he would twice earn All-American honors. He placed in the top ten of the Big Ten in cross country three different years and finished 4th (junior) and 3rd (senior) in the Big Ten in the 10K during his junior and senior outdoor track seasons.
Scott Sovereen - Class of '75
Scott Sovereen participated football, basketball, and baseball earning nine varsity letters at Midland High School. He was a three year varsity basketball player and at the time of his graduation held the record for most games played (65) leading the team as point guard to its then best 18-5 record. Sovereen excelled as a kicker on the football field earning SVL 1st team honors and All-State distinction in 1974. He continued his football career at Purdue University, kicking for the Boilermakers until 1978. He was named to the Big Ten’s First Team and the Associated Press Second team in 1978. At the time of his graduation he led Purdue in single-season field goals made (15) and career field goals made (27). Sovereen was named to Purdue's All-Time Team in the 100 year celebration of Purdue Football.
Norm Betts - Class of '78
Norm Betts earned six varsity letters while participating in football, hockey, and baseball at Midland High School. Betts earned Saginaw Valley First Team and best defenseman honors during two hockey seasons and was name 1st team All-State in 1978. He was named the Chemic Football team’s MVP in 1977 earning All-Conference, All-Area, and 1st Team All-State honors. Betts continued to play football at the University of Michigan earning All-Academic Big Ten and All-American Academic honors. Dr. Betts graduated class Valedictorian from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1986 and completed a Master of Science in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1990. He has since served in multiple academic leadership posts and earned numerous professional honors.
Kelly Jaster (Barrie) - Class of '90
Kelly Jaster earned eight varsity letters while participating in basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer at Midland High School. As a softball pitcher, Jaster was twice named All Conference & All District and was the SVL most valuable player in 1988 & 1989 compiling a 29-3 pitching record with a 0.67 ERA as a 3rd Team All-State sophomore. She earned volleyball All-SVL and Regional first team honors in 1990. Jaster scored a career 1064 points on the basketball court earning All-SVL 1st team and Detroit Free Press 5th team All-State. Jaster continued to play basketball at Alma College where she was a starter on the 1992 NCAA Division III National Championship team.
Erin Hartley (Buchanan) - Class of '98
Erin Hartley participated in five different sports (cross-country, track, basketball, golf, and volleyball) and earned eight varsity letters in her three years at Midland High School. She earned All-State Honors during her sophomore year in Basketball and Track (high jump.) However it is her volleyball career that sets her apart from other athletes. Hartley was twice named the Saginaw Valley League MVP (1997, 1998) and earned All-State honors in 1998. She played volleyball at Michigan State University from 1998-2002. Hartley was the Spartan’s MVP and unanimous All-Big Ten choice in 2001. At the time of her graduation she held two Spartan career records in block assists (494) and total blocks (581). Hartley’s volleyball career also includes a year as a member of the United States National Volleyball Team in 2001 and a season of professional volleyball for Vicenza in the A-1 Italian League during the 2002-2003 season.
Tom Hursey - Coach
Coach Hursey led the Chemic boys basketball team for 21 seasons, winning one SVL title, four Districts, and two Regional championships. He started the first softball team at MHS and coached 9 seasons total for a 168-41 record; winning five SVL and five District titles in that span. Additionally, Hursey led the Chemic boys golf team four SVL championships. In total, Coach Hursey led his teams to 496 victories and 10 Saginaw Valley League Championships. Anyone attending Chemic football games for 25 years would have heard Hursey as the Public Address Announcer. He was a co-founder of the MPS summer basketball camp as well as the Midland Junior Golf Program. Hursey received the Lloyd Osborne Award in 1996. He is a founding member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. BCAM’s highest honor of service is known as the Tom Hursey Distinguished Service Award.
Ernie Carter - Coach
Coach Carter was a three sport athlete while growing up in Mississippi. He came to Midland after earning degrees at Alcorn State and Miami of Ohio. Carter’s boys & girls cross country and boys track teams have won numerous league and regional championships. He has been honored 15 times by the Saginaw Valley League as its cross country coach of the year and three times as the boys track coach of the year. He received the Lloyd Osborne Award in 1993 and was the inaugural Bob Stoppert Coach of the year award winner in 2004-2005. Carter was awarded the prestigious Gerstacker Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1995. He has a passion for storytelling and memorizing poetry and has inspired countless Chemics with his positive attitude and relentless work ethic.
Rob McQuaid - Class of '79
Rob McQuaid participated in football and basketball at Midland High School. McQuaid was named to the 1978 Saginaw Valley League First Team, the Detroit Free Press 1st Team All-State, and was the recipient of the Bay City Times Golden Helmet Award. McQuaid chose to play basketball at the college level; earning a scholarship first at Central Michigan University from 1979-1981 and then at Midwestern State University from 1981-1984. He continued his passion for sports by teaching and coaching high school and AAU basketball and golf in Texas.
Dr. Mark Goethe - Community Member
Mark Goethe was a three-sport athlete at Midland High School, participating in football and basketball, and was All-State in the high jump in 1976. He graduated as a Chemic in 1977 and continued his athletic career at Harvard University where he was a football player and high jumper for two years, earning his undergraduate degree in 1981. He then moved back to the Midwest to earn his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1985. Dr. Goethe specializes in orthopedic surgery, and since his return to Midland he has become a fixture on the Midland football sideline donating his time and talent to ensure a qualified medical presence for the safe treatment of injury. Dr. Goethe has always made time in his private practice to see Chemic athletes assisting them in their return to participation.
